Their favorite part of their creation is the butterflies, bees, praying mantes, ladybugs, and all the birds that enjoy sharing the space.
Colette and Tim were originally daunted by the large lot when they purchased their home in February 2009. They didn't believe in wasting water on the expansive, existing lawns, so they embarked on creating a water-wise garden.
The front yard includes cactus and succulent garden with a Palo Verde tree, olive trees, ornamental grasses, and a variety of native or pollinator-attracting shrubs. They also added in a vegetable garden that provides an abundant amount of produce year round. The backyard includes lemon, lime, mandarin, avocado, apricot, and mango trees. Both lawns are UC Verde Buffalo Grass; a low water, high heat-tolerant grass.
The gardeners increased their useable outdoor space by incorporating two Brazilian Walnut (Ipe) decks, and they did a great job designing their driveway so that it captures and returns the rainwater to the groundwater supply. Their favorite part of their creation is the butterflies, bees, praying mantes, ladybugs, and all the birds that enjoy sharing the space.
The Bruces were excited to be a runner up winner in Roger's Garden California Friendly Garden Contest in 2014 and are happy to be part of the Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour for the second time.
