21. Greg & Vicki Brown-Middlesworth

16521 Charleyville Circle
Huntington Beach 92649

Access: No wheelchair access

When Greg and Vicki purchased this house, the yard was full of dirt, dying cypress trees, and a broken-down sundeck.  Today, the garden has emerged as an outdoor living space with multiple garden vignettes. The courtyard of artificial turf is filled with Australian violet, azaleas, camellias, and pittosporum trees. Stroll down the sideyard to the “secret garden” filled with succulents growing in re-purposed vessels and fresh herbs. Spend time on the patio with hanging annuals, or sit on the redwood deck and listen to the wind chimes in the ornamental pear growing through the deck. The gardeners let the sod go in favor of what Greg calls “playground grass,” -a drought-friendly mixture of whatever blows in from the golf course. The two 60-foot terraced flower beds are filled with floribunda roses, annuals, and lime, lemon, and blood orange trees.  Venture up 20 stairs to the third level, enjoy the climbing Cecile Brunner roses, and sit in the pergola to watch the golfers or the sunset.
