Fall's Favorite Flower, the Mum!

I always know that fall is here when I see mum's for sale in our Heard's Memorial Garden Tour nursery sponsors. They also seem to pop up on my neighbor's porches and outside of my favorite places to shop. Chrysanthemums (their proper name) aren't the most glamorous in the flower kingdom, especially if you compare them to the roses and hollyhocks that reign during the summer - but to me they're the Queens of Fall.

Mums come in several colors, they're affordable and super easy to keep alive (even for those of you who say you have a black thumb! Please visit one of our Heard's Memorial Garden Tour sponsoring nurseries (you'll find the list on our website) where you'll find perennials to plant in your garden and beauties ready in decorative pots for indoor decor. Take a look at some of the many styles that await you to get your home and garden ready to say Happy Thanksgiving...

On the left is the variety known as the Anemone and on the right is the Spider.

The beauty on the left is known as a Semi-Double and on the right is an Intermediate Incurve.

Last but not least on the left is a Spoon version, and on the right is a Quill.

Mums are super easy to grow here in Southern California! If you're planting them in your garden, they require six hours of sunlight per day for the blooms to look their best and last longer. Water the soil when feels dry to the touch. Removing dead or faded flowers (deadheading) will keep your mum looking its best and will encourage new growth. After all the blooms have died, I chop my mums down to an inch or two. Within a week or two, new green leaves appear, and the plant begins to grow taller, followed by the emergence of new blooms.

No matter the style, these fall beauties always announce that Thanksgiving is right around the corner!
