A colorful blend of succulents, natives, and drought-tolerant blooms thrive in harmony with a historic Spanish Revival home, Sonia’s garden is a colorful showcase of drought-tolerant design. The lawn was replaced with decomposed granite, dry creek beds, and island plantings that thrive in Southern California’s climate. Succulents, cacti, native plants, and low-water shrubs create year-round interest, from the pink blossoms of Redbud trees in winter to cascades of California poppies in spring and the vibrant purples and oranges that last into fall. Ornamental grasses contrast with softer foliage, while cactus and succulent flowers surprise with their brilliance. A large collection of Talavera pots and whimsical ceramic butterflies and animals adds playful splashes of color throughout the garden. Together, the thoughtful plantings and artistic details make this garden both a celebration of beauty and a model of water-wise landscaping.
